Rolex Milgauss – Black Dial

8 minutes read

In our previous article, we had the pleasure of presenting the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Milgauss in all its "Z-Blue" glory. Today, we are looking at the other Rolex Milgauss variant, with a black dial, colored select hour markers but, crucially, the same outstanding green sapphire crystal.

The story, as well as the consequent, especially anti-magnetic properties of the Milgauss we discussed in our previous article. For now, allow us a more concise presentation by telling the basics of its fascinating story. To develop the Milgauss, French for "one thousand Gauss", Rolex worked with scientists of the famous CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, as it was them who had originally requested an accurate timepiece that they could wear near the powerful magnetic fields of scientific equipment.

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Milgauss combines a black dial and its bold orange accents with a green sapphire crystal, to create a much-loved aesthetic that is absolutely unique to this collection

This particular variant of the Milgauss pairs the traditional, jet black backdrop with the bold colors and shapes that the Milgauss has been associated with since its inception over 60 years ago. The black dial features orange minute markers on its periphery, as well as orange luminescent 3-6-9 o'clock applied hour markers.

A must-have for every Milgauss is the lightning bolt seconds hand, definitely among the coolest and arguably most light-hearted small details ever placed on a genuine Rolex design.

It is not merely form over function, either, as the seconds hand serves as an ample reminder of the Milgauss' painstakingly engineered anti-magnetic properties.

Available exclusively in Oystersteel stainless steel and exclusively on the iconic three-link Oyster bracelet, the Milgauss comes with a case diameter of 40 millimeters. Water resistance is rated at 100 meters, plenty enough for everyday use scenarios, including quick swims or scuba diving – should you wish to take your Milgauss on such adventures.

The movement, ticking away behind the soft iron inner cage, is the Manufacture Rolex Caliber 3131, a Superlative Chronometer that is both a COSC independently certified chronometer caliber, as well as a Rolex-tested fully cased watch.

The iconic lightning bolt seconds hand remains a key aesthetic element of the Milgauss, adding a twist to the design and serving as an apt reminder of its anti-magnetic properties

Once the Chronometer Testing Institute certified movements return to Rolex, the movements are cased up and it is after the fact that Rolex subjects every watch – including every Milgauss – to its uniquely stringent tests concerning accuracy (-2/+2 seconds per day), water resistance, power reserve and automatic winding efficiency.

Exceptional details define every Rolex watch, even those designed for some of the challenging and trying use scenarios and locations in the world. The Milgauss features 18ct white gold hands and appliqués

It is only after a watch has passed all tests with flying colors that it can carry the title "Rolex Superlative Chronometer" – a designation most fitting for a watch designed for the world's leading scientists.

We would be delighted to present you the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Milgauss in our Authorized Rolex Petite Geneve Petrovic boutiques in Budapest, Belgrade and Porto Montenegro.
