Tudor Black Bay GMT

7 minutes read

It is with good reason that the GMT complication, the simple indication of a second time zone, is high-end watchmaking's trendiest feature at the moment. This year Rolex and its sister-brand Tudor have impressed and amazed watch lovers across the globe with the launch of two new GMT models – today we are looking at the new-for-2018 Tudor Black Bay GMT, reference M79830RB.

The new Tudor Black Bay GMT is a mixed bag of much-loved features, put together in an effort to create a distinctly Tudor and immediately likable package.

At 41mm wide, the Tudor Heritage Black Bay GMT makes for a bold, yet comfortable fit

The Black Bay case is 41 millimeters wide and is crafted from stainless steel, whereas the bidirectional 48-notch bezel, in matt burgundy and blue, is in anodized aluminum.

DIAL ADOPTS THE CHARACTERISTIC ANGULAR HANDS KNOWN TO COLLECTORS AS SNOWFLAKE, THAT APPEARED IN THE BRAND’S 1969 CATALOGUE AND THE LARGE WINDING CROWN

The cold, restrained elegance of beautifully finished stainless steel, the rough charm of a riveted bracelet, the snowflake hour hand and the fun combination of two lively colors create an overall impression like no other. Whereas the Rolex Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master II "Pepsi" – also launched this year – impresses by continuing a remarkable legacy of GMT-Master II timepieces, Tudor chose a somewhat more playful, retro-inspired approach for its hot new GMT release

The new Tudor Heritage Black Bay GMT next to what already is a classic: the Black Bay with a burgundy bezel

The riveted bracelet along with decidedly omitted crown guards create a bold, casual appearance, further enforced by the slightly, but noticeably larger, 41mm case. The dial appears comfortably wide, allowing for exceptional legibility. The dark backdrop stands in stark contrast with the white indications and the subtle, but welcome addition of a date window at the 3 o'clock position.

Comfort is one of Tudor's most important features

The GMT hand is in red to harmonize with the blue-red bezel and stand out against the other indications of the dial. During traveling, local time can be read via the snowflake hand whereas home time is shown by the 24-hour GMT hand – so that you'll easily know whether it is AM or PM back at home.

The movement powering the new Black Bay GMT is the Tudor Manufacture Calibre MT5652, a COSC Chronometer certified movement that has an impressive, weekend-lasting 70-hour power reserve – should you decide to leave the watch rest a weekend, putting it down on Friday it will be waiting for you running and keeping accurate time come Monday morning.

Tudor's terrific new GMT movement, the Tudor Manufacture Caliber MT5652, equipped with a GMT display and a 70-hour power reserve and boasting COSC Chronometer Certification

Water resistant to a depth of 200 meters or 660 feet, the new Tudor GMT is a true Black Bay too, without losing any of the original's diving capabilities. With such a depth rating you may rest assured your Tudor GMT will be able to accompany you anywhere, even deep under the surface.

Compared with the cool appearance of the riveted bracelet, the "Terra di Siena" leather strap lends a warmer look to the new Tudor Black Bay GMT. One thing is for sure - it looks striking on all three

Matched to a riveted steel bracelet, "Terra di Siena" brown leather strap or a black fabric strap with a burgundy band and a buckle, the Tudor Black Bay GMT will provide exceptional wearing comfort, effortless style and a deservedly popular feature.
