The Tudor Black Bay Steel presents the essence of Black Bay in a sleek, all-steel form where case and bezel are all crafted from exposed stainless steel, without the use of ceramic or an aluminium bezel insert. The 41 millimetre diameter case is at the larger end of the spectrum for Black Bay case sizes, making for more modern proportions and a more ideal fit on wider wrists.
The stainless steel case features polished and satin finished surfaces, all laid out in a calculated fashion to create the high level of refinement Tudor watches are known and appreciated for. As such, the very edges of the lugs feature a polished bevel that runs all the way to the tip of the lugs, framing the entire case in a thin reflective veneer that wraps around the satin finished surfaces on the top of the lugs and bezel.
The lugs are set wide apart with a 22mm lug distance, giving the Tudor Black Bay Steel a broader stance, a more rugged look and a more secure fit against the wrist.
Reference M79730 is made available on a fabric strap as pictured here, on an aged leather strap, as well as the riveted stainless steel three-link bracelet.
Changing the bracelet or strap can drastically alter the looks of a timepiece and the Black Bay Steel reacts especially well to these easy-to-make modifications. On the steel bracelet, it takes on a tool-like aesthetic ready for the next dive deep under the surface, the aged leather strap transforms it into a rugged wrist-companion from the middle of the last century, while the fabric strap lends a modern, adventurous mood.
The domed sapphire crystal makes for a fascinating play of light on the very edge of the watch without ever compromising legibility, protecting the black dial underneath that is also domed. A rare feat for a watch dial, the gentle but noticeable downwards curve on its periphery is always a fun detail to scrutinize.
The so-called snowflake hour and seconds hand accompanied by the large sword minute hand float over geometric shapes of hour indices, all designed installed in an effort to aid error-proof and easy reading of the time under any and all circumstances. The date, displayed at the 3 o’clock position, fits into this theme and neatly complements the rectangular hour marker at 9 o’clock.
Underneath the dial and protected by the 200-meter water resistance rating of the Black Bay Steel is the Manufacture Calibre MT5612, a self-winding mechanical movement with a bidirectional rotor system. The MT5612 calibre inside every Black Bay Steel is individually tested by the independent chronometer testing institute, COSC, in Switzerland, ensuring that the movement meets the stringent performance requirements of a true chronometer. Power reserve is an extended period of approximately 70 hours, or around three days, a testament to Tudor’s modern watchmaking solutions.
On the wrist, on either of its bracelet options, the Tudor Black Bay Steel appears as a powerful and robust timepiece with beautiful details of high refinements both inside and out.
